Testing of lubricating and insulating oils

In all systems in which rotating or otherwise moving parts are installed together, friction processes occur and thus also friction losses.

Lubricating oils or other lubricants are used to reduce friction, noise and, above all, wear. In addition, lubricants are used to dissipate excess heat to prevent overheating and associated damage.

The condition of the oil filling is partly decisive for the operational reliability of transformers / transducers etc.. Often mineral oil-based oils are used here, as insulating and cooling agents. These are regularly tested for different types of stress.

Our customers are utility companies (power supply companies, operators of onshore, nearshore and offshore customers of large wind farm operators), as well as grid operators and engineering companies that design, commission and maintain transformers.

Relevant parameters for insulating oil tests

  • Investigation of insulating oils to characterize the properties of the substance. 
  • Color, water content, neutralization number, surface tension, breakdown voltage, dielectric loss factor (tangent delta), FT infrared spectroscopy (inhibitor determination), gas chromatographic analysis for PCB and DBDS determination
  • Gas-in-oil analyses for characterization of dissolved gases and their evaluation 
  • On the basis of the various types of contamination, typical patterns of the gases produced or of their ratios to one another emerge.
  • We have the necessary know-how of the classical gas extraction by means of vacuum technology as well as the EGS method.
  • Evaluation according to DIN EN 60599 and VDE 0370 part 7
  • if required: History comparison and recommendations according to standard

  • Density, viscosity according to STABINGER and by means of UBBELOHDE capillaries, acid number, foaming behavior, air separation capacity, 
    water separation capacity, total contamination, element contents in oils, water content according to KARL FISCHER, FT infrared spectroscopy (inhibitor determination),
    Particle counting & purity classes, visual assessment of oil samples, color number, electrical conductivity, flash point determination, determination of cold properties and MPC (Varnish).
