Up from the 1st of July 2007, feeding transports of GMP-certified companies are only allowed to be fulfilled by ships owning a relevant certification due to the hygienic codex for inland navigation. This certification will be issued after successful verification and certificates the fulfilling of the hygienic codex.
Since May last year, the PDV finalized the requirement that the inland navigation needs to be involved increasingly into the quality management system GMP.
First precondition for this certification is the registration and listing of each barge of a company at the PDV. This list was published for the first time in July 2005. Since this day only ships which are registered at this list are allowed to transport feeding stuff for GMP-certified companies. The control takes place at the loading points.
The following timing of the PDV is scheduled as the following:
1. Until the 1st of July 2006 the verification to fulfil the hygienic codex is required.
That means that up from this date listed companies have to conclude a contract with an inspection institution, accredited by the PDV:
In Germany the SGS Germany GmbH is accredited as sole inspection institution for this accreditation.
SGS Germany offers the verification for complete Germany.
2. Up from the 1st of July 2007 only certified barges are allowed to transport feeding stuff owned by GMP certified companies. This control takes place every two years by an accredited institution.
Benefit of this enlargement of barges is the realisation of highest safety within the food supply chain, particularly with regard to the consumer.
Feeding stuff is especially susceptible for impurities and infections; as a result the need of hygienic transporting is indispensable.
At the past the barges were controlled in the context of GMP, means cleanness and sanitation but there was a lack of a strictly control like it is handled with trucking.
The verification of a barge is fulfilled by a check list. The hygienic circumstances of the ship are controlled by documents (cleansing, inspections etc.) as well the hygienic circumstances of the shipping spaces (mud, oil, pest etc.) and the ship-equipment.
This check list can be viewed at the PDV Website
