Due to their danger, dioxins are examined in minute concentrations. Some dioxins are of special importance because they accumulate in fatty tissue. Since dioxins occur every-where, it is important to know about background exposures.
When exporting foodstuffs to some countries, it must be ensured that the content of polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans are within the background value of the exposure. For this purpose the appropriate certificates are provided.
In regard to animal feed it is increasingly accepted that feed additives are not allowed to contain more than 0.5ng WHO-TE/kg TS dioxins. Stipulating these intervention values reduces accumulation in the food chain.
