There is no standard definition for "bottled water" on the international market. Because of this, the water market outside the EU differs in many ways from the domestic market and this situation requires knowledge of the special legal underlying conditions.
The understanding of mineral water in the EU is that it is a natural product with original purity which comes from an underground water deposit and has to be protected against contamination. Therefore, very stringent quality requirements have to be fulfilled to obtain the obligatory official recognition and usage approval. But recently other types of water have become established, such as spring water and table water. Also, as part of new statutory regulations, products such as Reverse-Osmosis-Water have also become marketable.
Bottled medicinal water is a special case as it is not classified as a food, but is, in fact, subject to the conditions of the German Drug Law. This, in turn, requires a relatively extensive approval and routine monitoring procedure.
