Joint Technologies

Custome’s benefit

A large number of modern joint technologies are in a phase of rapid development. One of the driving forces behind this is the automotive industry. Identifying the causes of faults and damage in joints requires very complex testing technologies in addition to specific material testing expertise and a profound knowledge of joint technologies.

In the Business Line Automotive, analysts, materials scientists and engineers with all the knowledge required for analysing and evaluating joint problems work together in an interdisciplinary team.
The team’s wealth of knowledge is continuously growing by regularly dealing with new, practice related problems, something which directly benefits our customers. Thus, the road to problem solution is short and effective.

Our range of services:

Since 2002, we are authorized by Daimler Chrysler for carrying out release measurements on adhesives, sheet metals, lubricants, adhesive foils etc. according to those tests:
  • T-Peel (VW PBL 662)

  • Tensile-shear test (VW PBL 640)

  • Adhesive strength (VW PBL 659)

For all modern joint technologies such as
  • Adhesive bonding

  • Soldering

  • Welding

  • Crimping

  • Bonding etc.

we have the relevant testing and inspectionmethods available as well as extensive expertise in all of these areas.

Problem areas (examples):
  • Bonding of plastic parts and metals, finding the causes of bond fracture; surface treatment (cleaning, forming, fluorinating, etc.)

  • Adhesive strength and long-term behaviour of adhesive films

  • Bond strength of electricity-conducting adhesives, causes for loss of adherence

  • Faults in soft soldering of electrical contacts on circuit boards, malfunctions caused by multisoldering, leadfree solders

  • Cavities/leaks occurring at soldering of plated aluminium alloys (radiators, piping systems), problems with contamination and solvents (e.g. corrosion)

  • Electrical faults after crimping and laser welding of wire bonds

  • Laser welding of stainless steel

  • Welding of plastics

  • Separation of bond contacts, etc.
