Construction materials

Clarifying faults and the causes of damage in the construction area requires a wide variety of test and analysis processes as well as expertise in regard to construction materials and construction technologies. Practically all construction materials are modified or damaged in one way or another during their product lifecycle. This refers to natural stone as well as bricks, concrete, mortar, rendering materials, ceramics, metal, glass, timber and coatings (e.g. paint).
Possible causes of damage:
  • Faulty construction methods

  • Use of unsuitable materials/material combinations

  • Heat/cold, temperature fluctuation

  • Radiation

  • Moisture

  • Mechanical stress

  • Chemical effects (e.g. by environmental contaminants)

  • Effect of microorganisms etc.

  • Coatings peeling off

  • Discolouration etc.

Important groups of damage are:

  • Material conversion, fatigue, material breakage

  • Erosion, corrosion

  • Discolouration

  • Coatings peeling off

  • Joints splitting etc.

Our range of services:
  • Preparation of all types of material (e.g. grinding)

  • Mechanical tests

  • Light microscopy (LM)

  • X-ray diffractometry (XRD)

  • Screening electron microscopy (SEM, ESEM) incl. electron probe microanalysis (EPMA)

  • X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF)

  • Time-of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS)

  • Instrumental chemical analytics

  • Microbiological tests

  • Analysis of contaminants (e.g. asbestos)

  • Analyses of „black dust“ problems

  • Assessments, expert opinions
