A new era will begin for producers and suppliers of electrical and electronic components in mid 2006. On 1st July the European Union directives 2002/95/EC (Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment – “RoHS“) and 2002/96/EC (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment – “WEEE”) will come into force.

These directives regulate the disposal of used electronic and electrical devices and/or prohibit to introduce new products into the market that contain lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium and/or brominated flame retardants (PBB, PBDE). At current state of the art these compounds are often contained in many components. Equipment producers are held responsible for ensuring that their products are free of restricted substances until the above mentioned date. Thus, immediate action is necessary.

• lead • mercury • cadmium • hexavalent chromium • polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) • polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)

• Step 1: cost-effective and quick analysis to check the presence of above mentioned substances
• Step 2: accurate, quantitative analysis with specific and sensitive analytical methods in the case positive results are obtained in step 1
