At the 24th of March the cost free collection for WEEE (waste of electric and electronic equipment) starts in Germany

Hamburg, 24th of March 2006

From this date on it is not allowed any more to put electric equipment in the household waste. Nationwide a network of collection points is set up where consumers can return their WEEE for free.
12 months after announcement of the “Elektronikgesetz” (German electronic equipment act) the last step of its practical implementation starts. The local authorities have the duty for free take back of the equipment – from toothbrush to freezer. The collection bases on the existing collection points and recycling centres in the communities. Fees which were charged in the past for household appliances such as washing machines are cancelled. Furthermore retailers can take back electronics on a volunteer basis and can create their individual take back system.
