Introduction

In March 2012 the Federal German Maritime and Hydrographic Agency – BSH, Hamburg, Germany asked SGS INSTITUT FRESENIUS GmbH, Germany, and Prof.Dr. Nick Welschmeyer, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, California, USA to undertake a ballast water research and development project: Effective New Technologies for the Assessment of Compliance with the Ballast Water Management Convention.

The project objectives are twofold:

  • the development of a representative sampling technique and procedures and
  • the definition of adequate methods for rapid, onboard ballast water analysis.
